Diabetes | The More You Know, The Better
Diabetes is not just for people who are overweight. More and more studies have concluded that this disease is actually caused by an autoimmune response. This means that a combination of stress, unhealthy food choices, leaky gut, and a lack of exercise are the real culprits. Of course, along with a genetic predisposition.
If you have a family member or friend who is diabetic, you know how serious the consequences of a poor diet can be.
What is Diabetes?
Type 2 diabetes is when your body’s (your pancreas to be specific) ability to produces the hormone insulin is impaired. This causes an abnormal metabolism of carbohydrates, leading to elevated levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood and urine.
What many people don’t realize is that when your body digests carbohydrates, they become glucose (or sugar) in your bloodstream. If you have noticed a “crash” around 30-60 minutes after a high carbohydrate meal, this is why. Your body is responding to the high amounts of sugar in your blood.
What Can Diabetes Lead to?
The inability for your body to control sugar levels has a dramatic effect on your organs. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, blindness, heart failure, stroke, and amputations. Aside from enormous complications that lead to a decreased quality of life, diabetes is the 7th leading cause of death among Canadians.
The Link to Autoimmunity
Recent studies have found that diabetes may not just be a metabolic disorder like previously thought. Researchers believe diabetes may an autoimmune disease. The biggest discovery to this is that treating inflammation may actually be a much more effective treatment than the traditional route of treating the blood sugar levels.
How Can Food Influence Your Health?
Maintaining a diet that is organic, free of GMO’s, and full of anti-inflammatory foods, spices, and herbs is the key to longevity.
