What the Colour of Your Urine is Trying to Tell You

What your digestive system produces as waste, is an incredibly important indicator to whether your body is functioning optimally. The colour, texture, viscosity, frequency, scent, of your urine all play a vital role in reading the messages correctly.

So I know this can be an uncomfortable subject to be talking about, but we’re not here to sugar coat anything for you. Your body sends you messages everyday to tell you what is happening, on the inside. For many of you, it is probable that you are ignoring the messages. And, that has lead you down a difficult path.

Why you Should Pay Attention to your Urine

Usually, it isn’t until you notice that something looks, feels, or smells ‘off’ that you start paying attention. Variations in the colour, odour, or frequency of your urine can indicate anything from dietary issues to a life-threatening illness.

As odd as it may sound to examine your urine, it is important to pay attention to what comes out of your body in order to maintain your health.

Now, you might be wondering what is the normal colour. The following is not meant to diagnose, treat or cure you. However, these are general guidelines to watch for when examining your urine.

Normal Colour

The normal colour of the urine is pale yellow or gold. Water dilutes urine, drinking more water will therefore, give a light yellow urine. If you have used the rest room and you find your urine is dark in colour, this may mean you are dehydrated. Use this as a sign to drink some more water. And, see if the colour begins to lighten over the next few hours.

Orange Colour

With orange colour urine, this could be a result of some ingested drugs like antibiotics and/or an increased intake of vitamin B. Yellow colouration can also be an indication of damage to the liver. If the latter is of concern to you, consider seeking out counsel from a medical practitioner.

Red Colour

Red to pink colouration might be an indication of blood in the urine. Blood, can be a sign for urinary tract infections and/or kidney stones. The red colour however, could be a result of some prescribed medications. Keep this in mind and always read prescription labels or consult with a pharmacist if you have concerns.

Green or Blue Colour

A greenish or blueish colouration in the urine can result from medicines or certain foods you have consumed. Urinary tract infections can also result in green urine. The blueish colour is more common in small children and is often related to the diapers they are wearing.

Dark or Brown Colour

This could been a sign of dehydration as mentioned above and there is need to drink more water. Dark or brown coloured urine can also give an indication of liver disease. If you have not been taking notice of the colour of your urine, you may need to have a rethink.this is a good time to start.

Certain Foods can Dictate a Colour Change

You may have noticed that after eating certain foods you may have different odour. But, what you may not realize is that eating a lot of a particular food can also change the colour of your urine.

According to Harvard Health, up tp 14% of the population experience a phenomenon known as ‘beeturia’ in which eating beets turn your pee pink or red. This is caused by anthocyanin, a plant pigment also found in blackberries.

Other foods that may cause urine discoloration are;

  • rhubarb
  • fava beans
  • aloe

… which can turn your pee brown. In addition, carrots and carrot juice could give your pee an orange tint, and asparagus can turn it a shade of green.

Overall, for hundreds of years doctors have looked at urine as a barometer of what is happening in the body. The urine can tell what you have been eating, how much fluid you are consuming, and what ailments you may have.

Urine is an important part of the body’s regulation process.

Its job is to remove extra water and wastes, that the kidneys filter out of the blood. The urine is there primarily to get rid of toxins or things that would otherwise build up in the body that would be bad for you.

Please do yourself a favour and keep these things in mind the next time you use the restroom.

It is a great place to gauge what is happening on the inside.
